What should you do if your spouse wants a divorce?

On Behalf of | Feb 7, 2022 | Divorce |

Learning that your spouse wants to get a divorce is often shocking. Even if you do not want to end the marriage, you must navigate the process to the best of your ability for you and your family.

While every marriage is unique, there are a few general steps you can take to reduce stress as much as possible. By doing the following, you can accept the divorce and begin to move on with your life.

Put your children first

All decisions made during your divorce should focus on your children. As hard as the process is for adults, it is even harder on kids. You must support them emotionally and facilitate a strong relationship with the other parent. You must also answer their questions to the best of your ability and allow them to express their emotions when needed.

Be rational when dividing assets

Division of assets is incredibly complex, even under the best of circumstances. You must keep your emotions in check when making these decisions, even when you feel a strong emotional attachment. For example, you may want to keep the family home, but you may also be better off selling it and keeping your portion of the money. Homeownership is expensive on a single income, so you must make sure you have the funds to support your decision.

Find support from others

Your friends and family can provide amazing support to you during this difficult time. Feel free to reach out to them when in need of assistance or if you just want to vent. Doing so ensures you are free to express your emotions, but it can also help you make good decisions when it comes to your ex. Finding support in your social network will also help you shield your kids from conflict, as you will have an outlet for your grievances.

Even when a divorce is in your best interest, you will still experience a range of negative emotions. If you feel overwhelmed or are not coping in a healthy manner, seek assistance from a mental health professional until you get back on track again.
